AIS Oil Drift Buoy
Traditionally, oil spill monitoring is done by helicopters, airplanes and ships. Decision makers are in need of in-situ information in order make the correct decisions and prevent environmental damage.
The drift of the oil spill is influenced by surface wind and ocean currents.
Aanderaa Data Instruments has designed and manufactured an AIS oil drift buoy for tracking oil spills, man-over-board or other floating objects.
The oil drift buoy has the same drift characteristics as oil and will by use of the Automatic Identification System (AIS) transmit the exact position, speed and direction of the oil spill on ships’ AIS screen.
The AIS messages are collected by the network and stored in databases for later analysis.
