MIPEG Rope Speed and Slew Angle Sensors

The MIPEG Rope Speed and Slew rotation sensors are digital encoders engineered into the winches or slew system.

The sensor will pick up the rotation of a shaft. This shaft may be a direct coupling or a geared/linked shaft to a load hoist winch or a boom hoist winch to monitor Rope Speed and Direction. As a Slew Angle Sensor, the unit is directly coupled or geared/linked to a shaft which gives a slew ratio to monitor crane rotation about its axis.

The sensors can be provided as a traditional rotational encoder, absolute encoders or even as proximity sensors reading target discs.

All sensors may be supplied to suit standard marine environment or hazardous condition,
zone 1 (Class 1 Div 1).

Key sensor parameters:

Sensor type Protection Operating temperature Certification
Absolute Encoder, safe area IP 65 -20 to +60 degrees C Safe Area
Absolute Encoder, zone 1 IP 65 -20 to +60 degrees C II 2 G EEx d IIC T4
Rotational Encoder, safe area IP 66 -40 to +75 degrees C Safe Area
Rotational Encoder, zone 1 IP 66 -40 to +75 degrees C II 2 G/D EEx d IIC T6
Proximity Sensor IP 67 -20 to +85 degrees C II 1 G EE ia IIC T6

MIPEG Boom Angle Sensor

  • Installed on the side of the crane boom foot section, using two bolts only
  • Measures the boom inclination above horizontal
  • Using "solid state" technology without any moving parts for maintenance free, long service life

The outside overall box dimensions are H x W x D;  133 x 133 x 128mm (5.2 x 5.2 x 5”), the material is cast iron, hot dipped galvanized and coated both inside and outside (weight approx. 8 kg/18 Lbs)

The sensor measures the boom angle. The hook radius displayed is based upon the crane boom length and geometry, calculated so the operator will have hook radius displayed in metres or feet.

The sensor is simple to install and is calibrated with using two known radii only.

The unit is sealed to IP66 (dust tight and heavy seas). The operation temperature is between -40 to + 65 degrees C (-40 to + 150 degrees F).

The unit is certified for zone 1 (Class 1 Div 1) operation,  II 2 GD EEx d IIB T6 according to ATEX , Directive 94/9/EC.

  • Measures tensile or compressive forces.
  • Sensor Welded to the object being measured, ensuring a durable stable bond.
  • Rugged and hermetically sealed according to MIL-STD-883-A.
  • Withstands a 10 times overload without failure.
  • Sensor assembly certified for use in hazardous zone 1 Atex II2 GD EEx d IIB T6

The Basic principle of the S-sensor is that the natural frequency of a vibrating strip varies according to the tension in the strip. The heart of the S-sensor is an S-shaped metal strip fixed at both ends to a metal ring. When the ring is deformed, the natural frequency of vibration of the strip changes.

This frequency is detected as an A.C voltage in a coil positioned close to the strip. The deformation of the ring is by means of two angle brackets welded to the ring and to the stressed steelwork. The ring, the S-shaped strip and the coil are hermetically sealed inside a stainless steel housing. The forced vibration of the strip is excited by regular short pulses in the coil.

The same coil is used for detecting the frequency of the strip which is excited by regular short pulses in the coil.
